This is actually really important, for more than one reason:
1) It demonstrates that, yes, non-white people are capable of making racist jokes.
2) It illustrates the point that, even for some liberals, the “race issue” in America is seen entirely as black and white (no pun intended) and completely ignores other minorities. Yes, only a handful of black people have won acting and directing Academy Awards: even fewer Asian-Americans have. The point of #oscarssowhite was to open up the door to all kinds of diversity, not just for black people.
3) I’m glad I was watching hockey instead of this cringe-inducing nonsense.
This is why #OscarsSoWhite is a load of crap. The people who made that hashtag only did so because there weren’t any black nominees. People are quick to campaign against the lack of African-American representation but allow other non-white races to be thrown under the bus during said campaigns.
I bet if there were more black nominees, people wouldn’t have made such a fuss, even when Asians/Latinos/Native Americans were still underrepresented.
Black people have already called out Chris Rock for these jokes. Actually Black people have taken issue with Chris Rock’s comedy, especially his since a lot of his material features anti-black jokes, targeting Black women especially.
That being said, OscarsSoWhite was and is open to any race, not just Black people. What a lot of other PoC want Black people to do is lift their burden without doing anything in return. Black people predominately have had no problem lifting up other voices. A Black woman even created the term Woman of Color to be more inclusive to other races.
The reason why the conversation of race is so “Black and White” is due to the hyper visibility of Black people, which isn’t a privilege.
Calling out (rightfully) so Chris Rock’s comedy is one thing, underlying anti-blackness with said critique is not acceptable.
April Reign (@reignofapril on Twitter), who created the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag/campaign, has already addressed the anti-Black criticisms such as those made by the second post in this thread
